Lützerath German Coal

[January 2023]

Lützerath is a village near the Garzweiler II mine, an open-cast lignite coal mine operated by RWE Power. Following the energy crisis in Europe due to the war in Ukraine, Germany, in search of new resources, concluded an agreement to extend the operation of the mine. This led to the decision to remove the village of Lützerath, which had been a symbol for climate activists across Europe for its resistance so far to its dissection.

In January 2023, climate activists tried to prevent the village of Lützerath from becoming the umpteenth victim of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine and the continuation of what they see as a misguided energy policy that contradicts the Paris climate agreement and makes it impossible to reach the target of 1.5 degrees.
